Staff holiday gifts people actually wear

By the Papaya Creative Studio team

The staff holiday gifts people actually wear are comfortable basics with a small, tasteful logo: hoodies first, then long sleeves, tees and hats. Skip the novelty items and the giant logos, and let people choose their own size.

If you're planning custom staff holiday gifts this year, here's how to choose, what it costs, and how to avoid the usual mistakes.

What makes a staff gift actually get worn?

People wear things that are comfortable, fit properly and don't feel like a uniform. That means:

  • A garment they'd buy anyway. A hoodie gets worn on weekends; a branded stress ball goes in a drawer.
  • A small chest logo. Left or right chest is subtle enough for off-duty wear.
  • Their actual size. Ask, don't guess.
  • A colour that goes with everything. Black, grey, white or blue.

Which items work best as holiday gifts?

Hoodies. The obvious winter pick: warm, useful, and the kind of thing people reach for on a Saturday.

Long sleeves. A lighter layer that works under a jacket or on its own.

Tees. The most affordable option. Better as a second item or a team-event shirt than as the whole gift.

Trucker hats. A good add-on, in black or navy, with one logo on the face.

What does a staff gift order cost?

Prices are per piece, including the garment and one DTF logo, in CAD plus HST:

Item 5+ 10+ 25+ 50+ 100+
Tee $20 $18 $16 $14.50 $13
Long sleeve $25 $22.50 $20.50 $18.50 $17
Hoodie $40 $36 $33 $30 $28
Trucker hat $25 $22 $19.50 $17.50 $16

The tier is based on the total pieces in the order, not per item. A big back logo adds $12 per piece on garments, though for gifts a chest logo alone usually reads better off duty.

A worked example

Say you have 12 staff and want to give each a hoodie. That's 12 pieces at the 10+ tier: 12 × $36 = $432, plus 13% HST ($56.16), for $488.16.

Now add a trucker hat for each person. The order is 24 pieces, still at the 10+ tier: 12 × $36 + 12 × $22 = $696 before HST.

Add one spare hoodie for the new hire starting in January, and the order hits 25 pieces. Now 13 hoodies at $33 and 12 hats at $19.50 come to $663 before HST, which is less than the 24-piece order.

How do you handle sizes without spoiling the surprise?

You have a few options:

  • Ask openly. "We're ordering hoodies, what size are you?" Asking beats guessing.
  • Ask under cover. Collect sizes for "team shirts" earlier in the fall.
  • Order a size run. Get a spread across sizes and let people swap among themselves.

Sizes run S to XXL. Mixing sizes, colours and garments in one order is fine, and the minimum is 5 pieces per order.

What mistakes should you avoid?

  • A huge logo on the front. It turns a gift into a uniform.
  • A low-quality logo file. Send the cleanest version you have; you'll see a digital proof before anything prints.
  • Leaving it late. December is busy for everyone, including printers. Order early enough to approve the proof without rushing.
  • One colour for everyone. Offering two colours doesn't change the price, because every colour counts toward the same total.

Should staff gifts be branded at all?

It's a fair question. A logo makes the gift a bit of marketing, and not everyone loves that.

A small chest logo is the usual compromise: clearly from the company, but subtle enough to wear anywhere. If your full logo is loud, consider a simpler or single-colour version for gifts.

How do you make the gift feel personal?

Branded apparel is practical, but presentation does a lot of the work:

  • Hand it out in person, not left on a desk
  • Add a short handwritten note
  • Let people pick their colour as well as their size
  • Pair it with something small and local, like a coffee card

None of that costs much, and it's what people remember.

How do you place a holiday order?

Decide the item mix, collect sizes, and send your logo. You can order online in our shop, and every order comes with a digital proof to approve before printing.

Get in touch early if you're aiming for a holiday handout, and we'll tell you current timing.

Common questions

What are good custom staff holiday gifts?

Hoodies and long sleeves with a small chest logo are the most practical choice, because people wear them outside work. Trucker hats and tees work well as add-ons.

How much do custom hoodies cost for staff gifts?

At Papaya, custom hoodies with one DTF chest logo are $40 each at 5 pieces and drop to $28 each at 100+, in CAD plus HST. The tier is based on total pieces in the order.

Can I mix hoodies and hats in one staff gift order?

Yes. Papaya's 5-piece minimum applies per order, and you can mix garments, sizes and colours, with the total piece count setting the price tier.
