Do I still need a website if customers find me on ChatGPT?
Yes, you still need a website, and AI search makes it more important rather than less. When people ask "do I need a website if AI search can answer questions about my business?", the answer is that AI assistants mostly get their answers from websites, and your own site is the one source you control.
ChatGPT, Perplexity and Google's AI Mode don't know your business from memory. They read the web, then summarize and cite what they found. If your site is thin, out of date or missing, they fill the gap with whatever else exists.
Where do AI assistants get their answers?
One study looked at what kinds of sources different AI search tools cite (source):
| AI tool | Brand websites | Lists, comparisons, reviews | Editorial |
|---|---|---|---|
| ChatGPT | 68.8% | 13.9% | 11.9% |
| Perplexity | 35.4% | 34.4% | 25.2% |
| Google AI Mode | 37.9% | 33.1% | 23.8% |
In ChatGPT's case, brand websites made up more than two-thirds of citations. Even in Perplexity and Google AI Mode, brand websites were the largest single group.
That is the core of the answer. A business's own website is the most-cited type of source. Without one, you are leaving the description of your business to directories, review sites and whoever happened to write about you.
Isn't a Google Business Profile enough?
A Google Business Profile matters, especially for local searches. But it is a short listing with limited room: hours, a phone number, a few photos, reviews.
AI assistants tend to answer fuller questions. "Who in Kitchener does custom renovations and roughly what does it cost?" "Which barbershop near me does fades and takes walk-ins?" Those answers need detail about services, areas served, prices and process. A website is where that detail lives. We compared the two directly in Google Business Profile vs website.
Does ChatGPT just use Bing?
Partly, but not simply. One study claimed 87% overlap between ChatGPT's citations and Bing results. A replication across 400 queries found 27.4% instead, and concluded that being indexed by Bing is "necessary but not sufficient" (source).
So registering your site with Bing Webmaster Tools is worth doing, and we explain how in Bing Webmaster Tools and ChatGPT. But it doesn't replace having clear, specific pages for the assistant to read and quote.
What makes a website easy for AI to use?
The same things that make it easy for a person to use, plus a few technical basics:
- Plain answers near the top of each page. What you do, where, and for whom, in the first couple of sentences.
- A page per service. One page that tries to cover everything is hard to quote accurately.
- Prices, even as "from" figures. Many people ask AI tools about cost. If your site says nothing, the answer comes from somewhere else.
- Schema markup. Structured data that tells machines your business name, address, hours and services.
- A robots.txt that allows AI search crawlers, and an llms.txt file that points them to the important pages.
Could your site be blocking AI without you knowing?
It is possible. Cloudflare lets site owners allow or block AI crawlers by category: Search, Agent and Training. For new domains added from Sept 15, 2026, Training and Agent bots are blocked by default on pages with ads (source).
None of that is bad on its own. But if you want AI assistants to find and cite you, check your hosting settings and your robots.txt rather than assuming they are open.
Does AI-written content help?
Be careful here. Google's September 2026 spam update, which began Sept 24, 2026, targets unedited AI-generated content pipelines. AI-assisted content with real human editing is fine (source).
The practical takeaway: write pages that say something specific and true about your business. Generic filler doesn't help people, search engines or AI assistants.
So what should a small business do?
- Keep a website, even a simple one, with accurate services, areas and contact details.
- Give each main service its own page with a plain answer up top.
- Put "from" prices on the site if you can.
- Check that AI search crawlers are allowed in.
- Register with Bing Webmaster Tools and Google Search Console.
None of this guarantees an AI assistant will recommend you. It does make sure that when one looks, it finds you, and finds the right information.

Common questions
Do I need a website if customers can find me through ChatGPT?
Yes. AI assistants build their answers from websites, and brand websites are the most-cited source type in ChatGPT. Without your own site, the AI describes you using other people's pages.
Does ChatGPT get its results from Bing?
Partly. A 400-query replication found 27.4% overlap between ChatGPT citations and Bing results, concluding that Bing indexing is necessary but not sufficient on its own.
How do I make sure AI search engines can read my website?
Check that your robots.txt and hosting settings allow AI search crawlers, add schema markup, and give each service a clear page with a plain answer near the top.
