Bing Webmaster Tools: the step most businesses skip for ChatGPT visibility

By the Papaya Creative Studio team

If you want ChatGPT to find and cite your website, getting your site properly indexed by Bing is a basic step most small businesses have never taken. Bing Webmaster Tools is the free dashboard that lets you submit your site to Bing, check what it has indexed and fix what it cannot read. It will not get you recommended on its own, but the research on Bing Webmaster Tools and ChatGPT points the same way: skipping it leaves a gap you do not need to have.

Here is why it matters, what the evidence actually says, and how to set it up.

Why does Bing matter for ChatGPT?

When ChatGPT searches the web to answer a question, it has to get results from somewhere. Bing's index has long been linked to that process, which is why so many guides tell businesses to "get on Bing".

The size of that link is debated. One study claimed an 87% overlap between ChatGPT citations and Bing results. A 400-query replication found 27.4%, and concluded that Bing indexing is "necessary but not sufficient" (AI Plus Automation replication).

That second finding is the useful one. Being in Bing's index will not guarantee anything, but not being in it removes you from part of the pool before the question is even asked.

Does your own website actually get cited?

It can. Research on AI search sources found that in ChatGPT, brand websites made up 68.8% of citations, with lists, comparisons and reviews at 13.9% and editorial sites at 11.9%. Perplexity and Google AI Mode leaned more on third-party sources, with brand sites at 35.4% and 37.9% respectively (Analyze, AI search source mix).

So for ChatGPT in particular, your own site is the main source you control. It is worth making sure it can be found.

How do you set up Bing Webmaster Tools?

The setup is free and mostly one-time:

  1. Create an account at Bing Webmaster Tools with a Microsoft account.
  2. Add your site. If you already use Google Search Console, Bing lets you import your verified sites from there, which saves a step.
  3. Verify ownership if you did not import. The common options are a DNS record, an HTML file or a meta tag.
  4. Submit your sitemap. Usually at yourdomain.com/sitemap.xml. This tells Bing which pages exist.
  5. Check URL inspection on your homepage and main service pages to confirm Bing can fetch and render them.
  6. Review the reports. Look for crawl errors, blocked pages and missing titles or descriptions.

Bing also supports IndexNow, a way for your site to notify search engines when a page is added or changed. Some hosts and site setups can do this automatically.

What can block AI crawlers without you knowing?

Getting into Bing is one layer. The next is making sure AI crawlers are not turned away at the door.

  • robots.txt. This file tells crawlers what they may visit. Some templates block more than they should. Check that it allows the search crawlers you want.
  • Cloudflare settings. Cloudflare lets site owners allow or block AI crawlers by category: Search, Agent and Training. For new domains added from Sept 15, 2026, Training and Agent bots are blocked by default on pages with ads (Cloudflare changelog). Worth checking which settings apply to yours.
  • Content hidden behind scripts. If your services and prices only appear after heavy JavaScript runs, some crawlers may see a near-empty page.

What else helps beyond indexing?

Indexing is the floor, not the ceiling. To be worth citing, your site still needs:

  • Plain answers to real questions. What you do, where, for whom and from what price.
  • Schema markup that labels your business name, address, services and hours.
  • An llms.txt file, a short plain-text summary of your site for AI tools.
  • Consistent details across your site, Google Business Profile and directories.
  • Content written by a person who knows the work. Google's September 2026 spam update, which began Sept 24, targets unedited AI-generated content pipelines, while AI-assisted content with real human editing is fine (AIO for WordPress).

We cover the bigger picture in how to get your business recommended by ChatGPT.

How often should you check it?

After the initial setup, a quick look once a month is enough for most small business sites. Check for new crawl errors, confirm new pages were picked up, and resubmit the sitemap after a major change.

If you add a page and it has not appeared after a reasonable wait, use URL inspection to see why.
