How much do Meta ads cost for a small business in Ontario?
Meta ads cost a small business in Ontario two separate amounts: the ad spend you pay Meta directly, which you set yourself, and the cost of managing the ads. Ad spend can be any budget you choose. Management with Papaya starts at $400 a month, or $900 a month with content included, plus HST.
Here is how each part works, with the maths laid out.
What are the two parts of the cost?
Every Meta ads budget splits into two lines. Keep them apart from day one.
- Ad spend. What Meta charges to show your ads on Facebook and Instagram. You set the amount, Meta bills your payment method, and it never needs to pass through an agency.
- Management. What you pay a person or studio to plan campaigns, make the creative, set up tracking, watch results and report back.
Mixing the two is how owners lose track of what is working. If someone quotes "$1,500 a month for ads", ask how much of that actually reaches Meta.
How much should you spend on ads?
There is no correct number, and we will not hand you an invented "average Ontario budget". Ad spend is a business decision based on what a customer is worth to you and how much you can afford to test.
A sensible way to set it:
- Work out the gross profit on a typical sale or job.
- Decide how many new customers a month would make the spend worthwhile.
- Pick a monthly test budget you could lose without hurting cash flow.
- Run it long enough to see a pattern, then adjust up or down.
You can set budgets per day or for the life of a campaign, and change or pause them at any time in Ads Manager. Meta explains the options in its Business Help Centre.
A worked example
Worked example only. These numbers are made up to show the maths. They are not a benchmark or a forecast.
Say you run a home-services business in Ontario and decide on $20 a day in ad spend.
| Line | Monthly amount | Paid to |
|---|---|---|
| Ad spend ($20 a day × 30 days) | $600 | Meta |
| Management (Papaya Meta Ads, starting price) | $400 + $52 HST | Papaya |
| Total for the month | $1,052 |
Any tax on the ad spend itself depends on how your Meta billing account is set up, so check your Meta invoices.
Now say a typical job leaves you $1,200 in gross profit. One job that came from the ads covers the month. Zero jobs means you paid $1,052 to learn what did not work.
That is the real question: how many customers does it take to break even, and is that realistic for your offer? We would also book ad spend and management to separate expense accounts, so six months from now you can see exactly what each one cost.
What does management include?
Papaya's Meta Ads management starts at $400 a month plus ad spend. Setup includes:
- The Meta Pixel plus the Conversions API, with deduplication so one lead is not counted twice
- Broad audiences with several distinct creatives
- A monthly plain-English report
Ads + Content starts at $900 a month plus ad spend. It suits businesses that also need the photos, videos and posts made for them. Both are listed on our pricing page.
Why does the creative affect what you get for your spend?
Meta's Andromeda changes mean the creative now drives who sees the ad. The recommended setup is broad targeting with genuinely different creatives, and the Conversions API running alongside the Pixel with deduplication (Jetfuel on Andromeda).
In practice, the same budget can be spent well or badly depending on the ads themselves. A management fee that includes new creative is doing different work from one that only adjusts settings.
Can you run Meta ads yourself?
Yes. Ad spend is the only cost you cannot avoid. Running it yourself swaps the management fee for your own time: making creative, installing tracking properly and checking results every week.
If you go that route, do three things:
- Set up the Conversions API, not just the Pixel.
- Make several different ads rather than one ad with small tweaks.
- Track ad spend on its own line in your books.
What should you ask before hiring someone?
- Is my ad spend paid directly to Meta, or through you?
- Is the management fee fixed, or a percentage of spend?
- Who owns the ad account and the Pixel if we stop working together?
- What will the monthly report show, and in what language?
Where Papaya fits
We manage Meta ads for local businesses from $400 a month, or $900 a month with content, plus ad spend that goes straight to Meta. You set the budget; the fee is quoted in writing and does not move. See our Meta ads page for what is included, or send a question through our contact form.
Common questions
Is ad spend included in Papaya's Meta ads management fee?
No. Ad spend is paid directly to Meta and is set by you. Papaya's management fee starts at $400 a month plus HST, or $900 a month plus HST for Ads + Content.
Is there a minimum budget for Meta ads?
You choose your own budget in Ads Manager, within the minimums Meta applies to each campaign setting. The more useful minimum is a budget you can run long enough to learn something without straining cash flow.
